Advent - The promise of peace

Nov 30, 2025    Pastor Garrett Ericson

In this powerful Advent message, we're invited to reconsider everything we think we know about peace. Drawing from Mark chapter 4's dramatic account of Jesus calming the storm, we discover that peace isn't something we achieve through controlling our circumstances—it's a gift we receive through the presence of a person. The disciples found themselves in a terrifying storm, waves crashing over their boat, yet Jesus was asleep in the stern. Their panic reveals our own tendency: we misidentify who is with us in our chaos. We see Jesus as merely a problem-solver rather than a peace-giver. But here's the stunning truth: Jesus intentionally led them into that storm through their obedience, not their disobedience. Our chaos becomes the breeding ground for God's peace. The Hebrew word 'shalom' means to restore order, and it only appears after the fall—because peace is needed when there's disorder. As we light the candle of peace this Advent season, we're reminded that all of God's promises find their 'yes and amen' in Jesus Christ. The practical challenge is profound: instead of striving to control peace, can we grow in contentment? Can we trust not just God's actions but His intentions? When we respond to fear with faith, worship instead of worry, and practice the ministry of presence with others, we position ourselves to receive the peace that surpasses all understanding—the peace that comes from knowing the One who commands even the wind and waves.
